About this place

A cozy atmosphere, decent food, live music and cheap margaritas make Behind the Wall a popular hang-out, especially with the foreign student population. Inside, Behind the Wall’s three rooms are linked by over-sized arched doorways, and provide seating for groups of two to ten. Mexican, Latin and Greek cuisine is served. The drink menu is varied and not too expensive by Nanjing standards - margaritas are served for only 15 Yuan from Sunday to Thursday. Live music is played on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from about 8:00pm to 11:00pm.

Note: “Behind the Wall” is sometimes referred to by the English translation of its Chinese name: “Answer”.

How to Get There

Behind the Wall is located near the Nanjing University Campus just off of Shanghai Lu. From Shanghai Lu, turn into the small Nanxiu Cun (南秀村, nánxiùcūn) and look to the left. It is up the stairs that lead behind the wall of the alley side. Swede & Kraut Restaurant is a little further down the alley.

Behind the Wall is very bad

This place was an utter disappointment. We went there on a tuesday night. First of all, three items on their ten item menu were not available. We ended up ordering veggie fajitas, chicken quesadilla, steak quesadilla, and soft tacos. It was only after quite some time that the food came. The bean side of the quesadillas was obviously microwaved and still partially cold. We told the waiter and he took both dishes away to reheat them. Unfortunately, they just put the entire dish back into the microwave, which resulted in soggy quesadillas and boiled sour cream. In addition, the spanish rice side was completely forgotten and only arrived after we told the staff three times. By then, we had already ordered the bill. The soft tacos with carnitas were remarkably underwhelming. The meat was overcooked and the seasoning completely missing. The worst part of the evening was when we found the thumbnail sized stone in the vegetarian fajitas. We informed the waitress - she just shrugged and said, it was part of the iron plate the dish was served on. No further consequences or apologies were made. The bill came at about 75 RMB per person for food and drink (not particularly great either), which is very steep for the quality of the food and service. It was very disappointing that the staff did not bother to apologize for the mishaps or even to explain the situation. This place sucks!

Good Friday night at Behind the Wall !

I went there last Friday night, it was so crowed and since i havent go there for a long time, many thing changed, but good changes.

The servise there is better now, and the food the drinks still good as before, Sangria and the chicken salad are always my order there.

And the music there are nice too, anyway, always a good place to hang out with your friends and talking, and enjoying the music there on the weekend....
