Beijing is not generally a pedestrian friendly city. However, the famous Wangfujing shopping street, just minutes from Tiananmen Square, is certainly the exception to the rule. The area has an eclectic mix of high end fashion boutiques and much more affordable shops. There are many restaurants in the area, but even if you’re not there to eat or shop, it is still a great place to people watch or just to wander and enjoy the crowds. Whilst all the action seems to be in the main steet, be sure to browse the interesting places tucked away in the side steets and alleys.

On the south end of Wangfujing is the Oriental Plaza. The Plaza is a huge shopping mall that contains a movie theatre, plenty of restaurants, and countless clothing stores, including many designer outlets, which, judging by the prices, are the real deal. Shopping in the Oriental Plaza is a very different experience to trawling the markets of Beijing; if it’s bargains you are looking for you are in the wrong place. This is a glitzy and upmarket mall.

Wangfujing is also a good place to go hunting for books, as the Foreign Languages Bookstore is a very good resource for English speaking travelers or expats in the city.

Set aside a Saturday or Sunday morning to visit Panjiayuan Market (also known as the ’Dirt’ or ’Ghost’ Market). It is Beijing’s biggest and best-known arts, crafts, and antiques market. There will be crowds, so just take a deep breath, prepare yourself for haggling, and most importantly, soak up the lively market atmosphere.

Art lovers and collectors can easily spend hours perusing the endless stalls where traditional and contemporary local artists display their wares. In addition to artwork and antiques there are countless other shops and stalls, many of which are makeshift, selling jewelry, beads, home décor, shoes, art supplies and every other Chinese curio or knick-knack imaginable. There is also a huge selection of Buddhist statues and artwork that is usually found in Beijing’s many temples.

The market opens very early on Saturday and Sunday mornings and starts winding down around 3pm. If you are looking for a real treasure of a find, then try to arrive early to beat out other knowledgeable antique shoppers. Even if you walk away empty-handed (unlikely), the bustle and atmosphere of Panjiayuan is an experience in itself, so be sure to pay a visit.

Silk Street lies in Xiushui East Street off Jianguomenwai Street, near US Embassy. It is a good place to buy cheaper goods and the resident foreigners in Beijing come here frequently. Whatever you want to buy, like bags, shoes, handicrafts or sweaters, you can bargain with the owners.

The Xiushui Market provides a wide variety of goods, from souvenirs to branded apparel. As it is an interesting experience and provides a chance to mingle with the locals, I think all foreign visitors to Beijing would be well advised to drop by.

Items bearing labels such as Gap, Timberland and London Fog are genuine, the only difference is that browsers here can haggle prices down. You can buy a sweater for RMB60 or RMB70 (US$7.25 to US$8.50) here, which would cost twice as much in the nearby shopping centers.

Subway Line 1, Yonganli Station.

Apart from the fact that you can find more pearls here (as the name implies) and the fact that there are probably not quite as many designer knock-offs, Hongqiao (Pearl Market) is not much different from Beijing’s two other well-known markets, Xiu Shiu (Silk Alley) and Ya Xiu (Cotton Market). The market is located opposite the Temple of Heaven. Escaping for some rest and relaxation at the temple may be necessary should the haggling in the market prove too much, or after you’ve spent more than you should have on fake Guccis and Louis Vuittons.

Most of the jewellery is on the higher floors. The top floor features a number of more exclusive shops specializing in pearls. Some of these shops have great views overlooking the Temple of Heaven, and they are much quieter with none of the frantic bargaining that goes on downstairs.

In the basement all manner of seafood is sold, most of which is live.

Note: Confusingly, Xiushui Jie Market also has a "Pearl Market" sign on the top of the building.  We're not sure what the relation is.

Xiushui Jie Market (Silk Street Market, 秀水街商场) is 5 stories and 1500 stalls of pure tourist-targeted copycat goods.  It is the replacement for the original Silk Alley Market which was located nearby.  There are too many fake brand name items here to even begin to list them.  Copied shoes, clothes, bags, and jackets can all be found here.  Do not expect them to last nearly as long as the real versions would last.

The shopkeepers here are skilled at soaking every last dime possible out of their foreign guests.  They quote opening prices that are anywhere from 2 to 20 times the price that they would actually accept.  They shout and grab, pretend to be angry, and sometimes actually do get angry.  They will always look for an opportunity to tell you why it is that they will give you - and only you - a special price.  Some of them speak English or other languages and they should all speak Chinese even if it is of the Beijing “er hua (儿话)” variety.

How to Get There

Take subway line 1 to Yonganli (永安里) subway station.  There are also many bus routes that stop at the Yonganli stop including buses 28, 43, 120, 126 and 403.
