About this place

Tianning Temple is located in Tianning Temple front street, west side of Beibinhe Road, West Bank of guanganmenwai moat, Xicheng District, Beijing, China. In the temple, there is the tallest brick tower with dense eaves in Beijing, which was built in Liao Dynasty.

Tianning Temple was built in the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty. It was called Guanglin temple at that time. It is one of the oldest temples in Beijing. In the Tang Dynasty, the temple was called "Tianwang Temple". In the early Ming Dynasty, the emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty ordered the temple to be rebuilt. In the orthodox years of the Ming Dynasty, the temple was renamed "Tianning Temple". Ming Zhengde, Jiajing and Qianlong years of the Qing Dynasty were rebuilt.
